ARTS – Anita Harrower, Chairman

Small Club Category

Best Single Project: Rural Plains Woman’s Club

This club organized a reception for students, parents and guests at a local high school’s Fine Arts event.

Best Overall: GFWC Kanawha Woman’s Club

This club gave art and photography supplies and money for an art course to three children with MD. They provided supplies for HOBY students to make posters, made holiday decorations for a nursing home, and had a program on opera.

Best Single Project: GFWC Valentine Woman’s Club

This club sponsored a Christmas craft workshop for children at a local community center.

Best Overall: Woman’s Club of Powhatan County

This club promoted the District Art Show with participation from 6 local schools and donated art supplies to school art teachers. They participated in a local Christmas parade, attended ballet and music concerts, wrote poems, made a scrapbook, and donated to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Best Single Project: Mathews County Woman’s Club

This club had a summer art program for children. They obtained two grants to pay for the teachers, supplies and school rental. They provided refreshments and volunteered as assistants.

Best Overall: Woman’s Club of Essex County, GFWC

This club hosted an Awards Ceremony for their local Student Art Contest. They have an “Artist of the Month’ display at their club house featuring local artists. They had a program by a professional photographer and supported the local theater group.

 

THE JEANNETTE T. ELLIS ARTS AWARD

Presented by Woman’s Club of Essex County, GFWC to Mathews County Woman’s Club

This club received grants and arranged advertising, supplies, rent, lunches, volunteers, and teachers for 150 children, 7-14 years old, to learn art.

Best Single Project: GFWC Regency Woman’s Club

This club removed trash and debris along the banks of the James River.

Best Overall: Rural Plains Woman’s Club

This club refurbished town and GFWC signs and beautified a school nature area. They recycled, used energy saving bulbs, collected cell phones and ink cartridges for an adult center, and shared plants.

Best Single Project: GFWC Varina Woman’s Club

This club organized a community cleanup for the Jamestown 400th Anniversary, working with county officials, police, VDOT, churches and volunteers.

Best Overall: GFWC Valentine Woman’s Club

This club beautified a Confederate ladies gravesite and a local fire station. They donated plants to a school, held an Earth Day Cleanup, used fertilizer and pesticide free products, and provided water for wildlife.

Best Single Project: Woman’s Club of Sandston

This club served lunch to 45 sanitation workers during a community cleanup. They made baked beans and dessert and solicited food, beverages, and plates from merchants.

Best Overall: Woman’s Club of Essex County, GFWC

This club created a children’s library reading garden and held a 6th grade water festival. They had a rain barrel workshop, well water education, and kids/parents activity books, hosted a DEQ speaker, and did oyster gardening.

Best Single Project: GFWC Kanawha Woman’s Club

This club participated in Feeding Body and Mind, collecting 94 books and contributing food items to the Central Virginia Food Bank for a total of $987.

Best Overall: GFWC Ashcake Woman’s Club

This club placed “Read While You Wait” signs on crates of books at a Laundromat and Free Clinic. They donated 2 boxes of books to the Goodwill.

Best Single Project: GFWC Worthington Woman’s Club

This club supported a local elementary school, with mostly single parent homes, through a Supply Closet with $760 worth of school supplies.

Best Overall: GFWC Varina Woman’s Club

This club sponsored scholarships of $1000 and $500 and volunteered 210 hours for public library book discussions.

Best Single Project: Tri Club Woman’s Club

This club sponsored a $700 scholarship for a Human Services major at a local community college, allowing her to make Dean’s List.

Best Overall: Woman’s Club of Essex County, GFWC

This club sponsored three scholarships totaling over $7000, requiring transcripts, two references, and an essay of personal accomplishments and goals.

 

THE BRANDON EDUCATION AWARD

Presented by Brandon Woman’s Club to Woman’s Club of Powhatan County

This club had full participation in donating time (404 hours), three scholarships, support for libraries, Books for Babies, and Kits for Kids totaling $9482.52.

 

THE EDITH EMORY MEMORIAL AWARD FOR EDUCATION

Presented by Abingdon Woman’s Club of Gloucester to Thomas Jefferson Junior Woman’s Club

This club coordinated a Reading is Fundamental program for Richmond elementary schools. Children enjoyed a variety of books and participated in incentive activities to earn extra books.

 

HOME LIFE – Tricia Dalton, Chairman

Small Club Category

Best Single Project: GFWC Regency Woman’s Club

This club continued its support of Easter Seals VA by serving on committees, planning events such as Eggstravaganza, and sponsoring a campership.

Best Overall: GFWC Kanawha Woman’s Club

This club supported Hospital Hospitality House, Pregnancy Resource Center, Friends Reaching Out to a Friend, fire victims, Canine Companions, and Project MAJC (local children with Muscular Dystrophy).

Best Single Project: GFWC Valentine Woman’s Club

This club supported Manorcare throughout the year with parties, decorations, BBQ’s, singing, flowers, and meals.

Best Overall: GFWC Worthington Woman’s Club

This club supported Easter Seals, Canine Companions, March of Dimes, Beaufont Health Care Center, Career Closet, and Christmas Mother program.

Best Single Project: Chesmond Woman’s Club

This club supported the Red Cross Web of Hope program by knitting caps, scarves, lap robes and preemie caps for third world countries for which they won an award.

Best Overall: Woman’s Club of Essex County, GFWC

This club supported Heavenly Hats, Canine Companions, emergency crews, Meals on Wheels, and Hospice and knitted hats for St. Mary’s babies.

 

HEALTH – Carol Yeaman, Chairman

Small Club Category

Best Single Project: GFWC Kanawha Woman’s Club

This club collected clothing, jewelry and house wares monthly and donated them to the Massey Cancer Center Thrift Shop.

Best Overall: GFWC Sycamore Woman’s Club

This club walked in the “Race for the Cure” and the Alzheimer Memory Walk. They bought cancer bracelets to raise money for research and donated to many health organizations.

Best Single Project: New Kent Woman’s Club

This club sponsored a booth at the county fair where people could have blood pressure and glucose checks.

Best Overall: GFWC Worthington Woman’s Club

This club participated in the Walk to the Cure and collected Yoplait lids for cancer research. They collected appliances, medical supplies and money for Cross Over Ministry and Camp Comfort Zone and donated to many health organizations.

Best Single Project: Mathews County Woman’s Club

This club held a bridge luncheon and donated the proceeds to a local Senior Life Style center for exercise equipment.

Best Overall: Henry Clay Woman’s Club

This club made posters for a fund raiser at McDonald’s and donated part of the proceeds to Walk for Life. They participated in Relay for Life by assisting with registration and walking.

 

THE EDNA HOLSCLAW MEMORIAL HEALTH AWARD

Presented by GFWC Hermitage Woman’s Club to Woman’s Club of Essex County, GFWC, and GFWC Regency Woman’s Club

The Woman’s Club of Essex County, GFWC – This club supported Heavenly Hats, had a program on Service Dogs of Virginia, and knitted newborn hats and afghans. They held a workshop to make Teddy Bears for four emergency services and donated toys and books to an emergency room.

GFWC Regency Woman’s Club – This club participated in the Komen Race for the Cure and Passionately Pink for the Cure. They provided holiday goodie bags to a Pediatric ward. They supported Easter Seals by donating a partial campership, helping with Eggstravaganza and Bingo for Easter Seals, and holding club silent auctions to raise money.

 

THE OLINE WALLACE BREAST CANCER AWARENESS AWARD

Presented by GFWC Valentine Woman’s Club to GFWC Worthington Woman’s Club

This club donated $200 to Change for Cancer. They supported the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation by collecting Yoplait lids, participating in the Race for the Cure, and sponsoring 2 tables at the Survivor Celebration Luncheon. They donated cartridges to “Recycle for Breast Cancer” and promoted self exams.

 

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS – Lyn Swallen, Chairman

Best Single Project: GFWC Regency Woman’s Club

This club supported, by collection and fundraising, a Mission for the Masai American Organization in Africa.

Best Overall: Metropolitan Richmond Woman’s Club

This club did seven projects including Care, Operation Smile and collections of warm clothes for children in Russian Orphanages.

Best Single Project: Woman’s Club of Powhatan County

This club had a silent auction and donation table that raised $2148 for Operation Smile.

Best Overall: GFWC Worthington Woman’s Club

This club had nine projects including Operation Smile, Heifer International, Plan USA, Care, World Food Day, UNICEF, and soldiers in Iraq valued at $2649.

Best Single Project: Tri Club Woman’s Club

This club prepared 34 shoeboxes for the Operation Christmas Child program of Samaritan’s Purse.

Best Overall: Woman’s Club of Essex County, GFWC

This club had 10 projects including five speakers in their Lunch & Learn series. They supported Operation Smile, Heifer International, HisNets, and World Food Day and wrote letters about Darfur.

 

ALEX’S FRIENDS – “HELPING CHILDREN IN CRISIS”

Presented by Metropolitan Richmond Woman’s Club to GFWC Ashcake Woman’s Club for Domestic Programs and to Woman’s Club of Powhatan Countyfor International Assistance

GFWC Ashcake Woman’s Club– This club held their Fourth Annual Harvest Run. This project involved many community members and raised awareness and $3000 for Hanover Safe Place, a local domestic violence shelter.

Woman’s Club of Powhatan County– This club continued its sponsorship of a child from Bolivia throughout the year. Members also held a silent auction to benefit Operation Smile and donated over $2100.

 

PUBLIC AFFAIRS – Jane Carroll, Chairman

Small Club Category

Best Single Project: Community Woman’s Club

This club supported the efforts of an army Captain serving in Afghanistan to provide school supplies to children.

Best Overall: GFWC Kanawha Woman’s Club

This club continued to provide significant support throughout the year to the Veterans Outreach Center, docents for the Executive Mansion, and support for the troops overseas.

Best Single Project: GFWC Valentine Woman’s Club

This club continued to support veterans and nursing staff at McGuire Veterans’ Hospital with treats and essential items.

Best Overall: Woman’s Club of Powhatan County

This club provided significant financial support to local fire and rescue squads and supported the local American Legion and National Guard Unit

Beast Single Project: Mathews County Woman’s Club

This club sponsored a candidates’ night forum at the local library. They prepared questions for candidates and provided extensive information to voters.

Best Overall: Woman’s Club of Essex County, GFWC

This club was very active in all areas including historic preservation, veterans’ affairs and safety. They allowed their club house to be used for court mandated counseling services to drug offenders.

 

GFWC PRESIDENT’S SPECIAL PROJECT – DOMESTIC VIOLENCE – Judy Lee, Chairman

Small Club Category

Best Single Project: GFWC Ashcake Woman’s Club

This club held their annual Harvest Run with $3000 going to a local shelter for abused women and children. They also educated the public on Domestic Violence and the shelter.

Best Overall: GFWC Kanawha Woman’s Club

This club provided posters and brochures for the GFWC VA Convention display, donated money for t-shirts and participated in the GFWC Walk for Life. They donated items to a local domestic violence shelter and to a family who had escaped an abusive situation.

Best Single Project: Woman’s Club of Powhatan County

This club helped a local domestic violence shelter by donating clothing, gift cards, food, baby items and cash. They also donated “Assault Recovery” kits to a crisis center associated with the shelter.

Best Overall: GFWC Worthington Woman’s Club

This club held a Christmas party at a local shelter, donating gift cards and dinner, had a work day, assembling outdoor items, and donated A-V equipment. They collected used cell phones for victims and participated in the GFWC Walk for Life.

Best Single Project: Henry Clay Woman’s Club

This club adopted a family that had escaped an abusive situation and donated clothing and gift cards to them for Christmas.

Best Overall: Tri Club Woman’s Club

This club donated $2000 worth of items from the Wish List of a local shelter. They also donated bus passes, phone cards, and cash raised by raffling off centerpieces at a meeting.

   

THE JACKIE OVERBOE AWARD FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Presented by Woman’s Club of Powhatan County to GFWC Worthington Woman’s Club

This club donated toiletries, clothing, small appliances and gift cards to Madeline’s House .They supported Fisher House and Women in Military Service. They donated over $2000 and 256 hours to Domestic Violence and almost $1600 and 60 hours to veterans.

 

THE PAT YORK WOMAN’S ADVOCACY AWARD

Presented by GFWC Bon Air Junior Woman’s Club to Essex County Junior Woman’s Club

This club sponsored The Haven, a domestic violence shelter. They collected cell phones and sponsored several fundraisers. The club gave over $5,000.00 to help with counseling, including career counseling.

 

FUNDRAISING – Sally Cary, Chairman

Best Single Project: GFWC Ashcake Woman’s Club

This club helped send birthday cakes to local college students. Members sent letters to families and got the cakes to the students.

Best Overall: GFWC Sycamore Woman’s Club

This club worked with a Junior club at a gift wrap booth, sold Innisbrook Wrap and Dutch Garden bulbs, participated in Benevolink, and worked at Bizarre Bazaar.

Best Single Project: Woman’s Club of Powhatan County

This club operates a clothes closet to help the community. They get items from community members, consignment shops, and other places.

Best Overall: GFWC Worthington Woman’s Club

This club held their 16th annual Silent Auction and Dinner, serving homemade dinner and desserts. They sponsored a night at a local theater and participated in Night Under The Stars.

Best Single Project: Tri Club Woman’s Club

This club hosted its 42nd Colony Cotillion.

Best Overall: Henry Clay Woman’s Club

This club sponsored a Christmas gift wrap booth at a local mall. They designed and sold a train pin (Ashland’s symbol). They worked with a department store for a Charity Shopping event.

Best Single Project: GFWC Kanawha Woman’s Club

This club supported HOBY by hosting a “Get Acquainted Social”, donating a scholarship, and co-sponsoring the Richmond CLeW.

Best Overall: GFWC Sycamore Woman’s Club

This club had Leadership and Reporting Workshops, a Nominating Committee Information Form and updated preference sheet. Members served the District and State and attended District, State, GFWC and RAPC meetings. They made a HOBY donation and served as CLeW facilitators.

Best Single Project: Woman’s Club of Powhatan County

This club supported HOBY by having members serve on the Board, donating two scholarships, funding an ice cream social, and planning, conducting and providing lunch for the Richmond CLeW.

Best Overall: GFWC Worthington Woman’s Club

This club held a Transition Meeting, used the GFWC Leadership Tool Kit, had a Reporting Committee, and co-chairmen as mentors. They made a donation to HOBY. Members served the District and State, attended District, State, GFWC and RAPC Meetings, and participated in GFWC VA LEADS.

This club presented its Annual Leadership Award for a club member who is not an officer.

Best Overall: Henry Clay Woman’s Club

This club had a Leadership Training Social, numerous committees, and leadership recognition. Members served the District and State and attended District, State, GFWC and RAPC meetings. They made donations to HOBY, Girls’ State and GFWC VA Headquarters.

 

THE PATRICIA CLOEY LEADERSHIP AWARD

Presented by Westwood Junior Woman’s Club to Thomas Jefferson Junior Woman’s Club

This club mentored newer members, held leadership celebrations, had members serving on the District and State level, and financially assisted delegates to Federation meetings. They provided a scholarship to the HOBY Leadership Seminar.

This club chooses an outstanding member annually and honors her at the May Banquet.

Best Overall: GFWC Kanawha Woman’s Club

This club spotlighted members at each meeting, had pizza and Christmas parties, and celebrated members’ birthdays with a gift.

This club had a Pajama Party with twenty seven attendees, five of whom were prospective members and three of them joined the club.

Best Overall: GFWC Worthington Woman’s Club

This club recognized a Clubwoman of the Month during the year, gave information packets to guests, and had business cards for members to distribute. They had socials and a suggestion box.

This club held a brown bag lunch to get to know each other.  Member talked about themselves and brought an old family recipe to share.

This club had pot luck dinners to allow for social interaction. They had programs which appealed to the members, a fashion show, and a Member of the Month.

This club added seven new members. They advertised in newspapers, handed out flyers at local events, and had socials at local restaurants to attract prospects for membership.

This club had a strong program of engaging, educating, and mobilizing members on a wide range of legislative issues. GFWC Legislative Alerts and Guide to Legislation and Advocacy and GFWC and GFWC VA resolutions were used.

Members worked at polling sites in primary and regular elections.

Best Overall: Woman’s Club of Essex County, GFWC

This club identified local concerns on the safety of ground water in shallow wells. Research and contacts with county and state officials followed, resulting in legislation by their delegate to the General Assembly.

 

PUBLIC RELATIONS – Sylvia Ellen, Chairman

Small Club Category

Best Single Project: GFWC Ashcake Woman’s Club

This club publicized Harvest Run using the club name in newspaper/website ads, web page, flyers, banner, race program, and t-shirts for runners.

Best Overall: Rural Plains Woman’s Club

This club had a club profile, articles in the newspaper, and club aprons. They used the GFWC logo on event signs and used email for newsletters. They keep a scrapbook and display it at events.

Best Single Project: Woman’s Club of Powhatan County

This club used a newspaper ad to solicit new members and a thank you ad for teachers. Meeting information was included in the “Community Calendar” with their web address.

Best Overall: GFWC Worthington Woman’s Club

This club had emblems, brochures, profiles, publications at meetings and events, flyers for fundraisers, apparel with club logo, business cards, and tent cards for officers and speakers. They had a Website and  Communications Committee.

This club used GFWC logo on members’ yearbooks for perfect attendance, pins, stationary, newsletter, profiles and on wooden block for president’s gavel.

This club had a Website and shirts with club name and emblem. They had 28 articles and photos in the local newspaper and PSAs on the radio. They had a club PR chairman and newsletter.

This club held its 75th anniversary celebration with a display of scrapbooks, old fundraising items, and Historic Hanover calendars. They prepared club history booklets for all attendees.

Best Overall: Woman’s Club of King and Queen County

This club prepared scrapbook pages for GFWC VA, displayed scrapbooks dating back to 1931, and held a celebration for 50 year members including an oral history.  They participated in a Community Pride Day and celebrated their 75th anniversary.

This club compiled club history folders for members and guests attending their 85th anniversary celebration.

This club prepared scrapbook pages and history for GFWC VA and archived scrapbooks for the club, library and museum. They sent members’ oral histories to GFWC, celebrated Women’s History Month and have an historic clubhouse.
